Kalike

We are a registered Trust founded by local professionals in psychology, mental health, education, and rural livelihoods.

Engaging with the children, parents, and teachers of Sirsi through Kalike, we have identified a pressing crisis in learning and development, exacerbated by widening skill gaps and social disparities.

Our initiatives have successfully supported over 100 children facing academic challenges, low self-confidence, and fear of examinations . Recognizing the prevalence of Dyslexia, particularly among lower socioeconomic groups, we’ve taken the initiative to address the lack of resources and facilities in Government schools.

Through collaborative efforts with the Education department , we have gathered essential resources, conducted impactful programs, and established conducive learning environments, aiming to enrich educational experiences for children in Government schools and hostels.

WHY IT WAS FOUNDED

Baseline Studies by the Education Department in Karnataka indicate that 40-50% of students in Classes 1-3 lack age-appropriate math and language skills. Verified by independent agencies like the Azim Premji Foundation, similar issues persist in Classes 4 and 5, with only 25% able to read a story, 22% a paragraph, 26% words, 19% identify letters, and 9% at the beginner level. In math, 79% can solve two-digit addition, 67% two-digit subtraction, 48% two-digit by one-digit multiplication, and 38% two-digit by one-digit division.

Annual Status of Education Reports over several years reveal persistent issues even at age 18, where 25% struggle to read a basic text, and over half can’t solve 3-digit by 1-digit division problems. Applied literacy and numeracy skills are also lacking, posing challenges in understanding instructions and financial calculations. Urgent interventions are needed to bridge these educational gaps.

Government school teachers, while capable and motivated, encounter obstacles like administrative tasks and infrastructure duties, affecting their efficiency. Recognizing the importance of education for underprivileged families as a means to break the cycle of poverty, we provide teaching assistance for 3 hours on 3 days a week, focusing on creative remedial education using storybooks, teaching aids, and child-friendly methods to address learning gaps.

We have also been closely associated with the local Education Department of the Government and are supporting them in their teacher training programs, especially in catering to the special needs of children.
